Artist: Emily Song
Title: 饺子 (dumplings)
Subject: Qi Liu
Medium: ballpoint pen on paper
Size: 69 x 54 cm
The Minderoo Foundation Judges’ comments:
“Dumplings is an extraordinary pen on paper work that speaks to culture, family, courage and the importance of building and sharing tradition. In both the work’s medium and subject matter, the execution belies its complexity. Emily tells her mother’s story with exquisite technicality including clever use of negative space. With a deft hand, Dumplings strongly demonstrates all three values celebrated by the Minderoo Foundation Spirit Prize.”

Artist: Sidney Tapia Title:Through you Subject: Siaosi Feiloakitau Medium: oil on wood board Size: 20 x 20 cm
The Installers’ comments:
“This artwork was chosen amongst portraits in which the ‘Gaze’ coming from within the subjects played a large part, as there are many varied senses conveyed. Some are dour and others peaceful, compassionate and knowing. The eyes of Tapia’s subject are looking back…a quick determined flash, to gain perhaps…a demand for recognition or a simple stare to communicate ‘catch up!’ A fine artwork above all else.”

“The judges were drawn to the energy of this work – its magnetism and power. The judges were also wanting to encourage the notion that not all emerging artists were a particular age.”
